Grandaddy Grenache
Grandaddy Grenache 2009: Some of Santa Barbara’s most creative and lively wines come from side-projects of young winemakers who work for bigger companies, and this juicy bottling from Matt Brady — who helps craft Jaffurs Winery’s Rhône superstars as his day job but runs the Vino Sapien Wine Co. as his own gig — is an exciting example each vintage.
This Granddaddy Grenache, the second ever, sourced 66 percent of the fruit from Thompson Vineyard in Los Alamos (whole cluster fermentation, giving spicy depth) and 34 percent from Larner Vineyard in Ballard Canyon (laying down a soft cherry base), and was crafted entirely by hand with Old World techniques. Only 92 cases were made, so snatch them before they’re gone.
