UPDATE: 3 p.m. — According to UCSB Police Sgt. Robert Romero, officers received a second-hand report from a person who heard a loud noise that was believed to be a gun shot near UCSB West Campus. Officers responded to the scene near Isla Vista Elementary School for a routine check. They called for backup from Sheriff’s deputies after they observed a male running away from them. The officers did not see a gun in the man’s hand and were unable to confirm that an actual shot had been fired. Romero said they were unable to determine why the subject was running away, and they were unable to locate him.

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m. — UCSB police and Sheriff’s deputies stopped searching in the Isla Vista area. They were unable to locate the suspect, according to a UCSB alert sent out just before noon.

ORIGINAL REPORT — The Isla Vista community is on high alert this morning after a suspect ran from UCSB police officers near faculty housing. According to a UCSB alert sent out around 9 a.m., the “suspicious subject” was described as a white male adult — 17 or 18 years old, 5’8’’, and around 150 pounds — wearing a black beanie, white shirt, and dark shorts. UCSB police and Sheriff’s deputies were on scene, and residents reported a helicopter hovering near the area. As of around 11:15 a.m., it appeared the lockdown at the Isla Vista Elementary School was lifted.
