Volunteers Needed for 3rd Annual AIDS Memorial Quilt Procession in Santa Barbara

In honor of AIDS Awareness Month, the 3rd Annual AIDS Memorial Quilt Procession will take place on Saturday, October 12th, starting at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse at 4:00 PM and concluding at Santa Barbara City Hall. This solemn and impactful event seeks to honor the lives lost to AIDS and raise awareness of the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.

During the procession, participants will carry sections of the iconic AIDS Memorial Quilt down State Street. The quilt panels, which memorialize those who have passed away from AIDS-related causes, are hung on bars for easy carrying. Organizers are currently seeking volunteers to assist in carrying the quilts. No previous experience is required, and carrying the bars is simple and manageable for participants of all abilities.

“Not everyone feels comfortable walking down State Street carrying the AIDS Memorial Quilts,” says Keith Coffman-Grey, organizer of the event. “But with more volunteers, we can display more quilts, making a larger impact in our community. Every panel represents a life lost, and each step we take raises awareness and honors their memory.”

Even with limited numbers in previous years, the procession has been a moving tribute, but this year organizers are hoping for a greater turnout to ensure a broader display of the quilt panels.
