The Santa Barbara Foresters, the 10-time National Baseball Congress World Series champions, will honor the legacy of Los Angeles Dodgers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully with a special panel conversation, audience Q&A and book signing prior to the team’s Saturday, July 13 contest at Santa Barbara High School’s Eddie Matthews Field at 4:30 p.m. against the OC Riptide.
The Vin Scully Day event with the Foresters will launch at 3:30 p.m. with an introduction to the book, “Perfect Eloquence: An Appreciation of Vin Scully,” recently released by longtime Southern California sportswriter Tom Hoffarth and published by University of Nebraska Press. The book features 67 essays from a wide range of those whose lives were impacted by the legacy of Scully, who retired after 67 seasons with the team in 2016 and died at age 94 in August of 2022.
Santa Barbara book store Tecolote Book Shop will be on hand for those wishing to purchase copies of “Perfect Eloquence.”
Hoffarth will participate in a conversation with several contributors to the book, and the panel will include special guest Ron Shelton, the renowned Hollywood screenwriter, director and producer — and Santa Barbara native. Shelton recently wrote his own book called “The Church of Baseball: The Making of ‘Bull Durham’.”
Those who contributed essays to “Perfect Eloquence” and are scheduled to appear are Santa Barbara native Paul Vercammen, known for his longtime work reporting at CNN and current communications director for one of the world’s most decorated and effective relief organizations, Santa Barbara-based ShelterBox USA; Tom Leykis, the Santa Barbara resident and iconic radio personality; and Jeff Proctor, veteran television producer on Southern California and national live sporting events who worked on Scully broadcasts.
Since the Foresters inception in 1991, the team has never had a losing season and has featured many future Major League Baseball players. Its history has been captured in a new book written by Jim Buckley called “ ‘Ster It Up! The Story of America’s Most Successful Summer Baseball Team,” available for sale at all Forester games as well as online and at local book stores.
Head coach Bill Pintard’s Foresters started this week with a 17-7 record in the California Collegiate League. The 2024 roster includes college players from across the country — Ohio State, BYU, Texas A&M, Northwestern, Texas, Rice, TCU, Texas Tech, Cal Berkeley, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Auburn and Ole Miss — as well as locals from UCSB, UCLA, Long Beach State and Westmont College.
Tickets to the Foresters games sell for $7 for adults and $3 for children.
