Join fine art painters Cheryl Doty, Annie Hoffman, and Susan Tortorici for their exhibition, 3 Takeaways, beginning Friday, March 29th from 5pm to 8pm at Doty Studio, 116 East Yanonali St, Santa Barbara, California. The show continues through April, Thursday through Saturdays from 1-5 pm, or by appointment.
The three artist friends met at a painting workshop in Santa Barbara in 2017 and have been painting together ever since. The Santa Barbara Funk Zone Live event is a welcome opportunity for them to showcase their work together for the first time. All three artists will be present to kick off the exhibition on March 29th and look forward to greeting art enthusiasts, patrons and friends for an evening of art and conversation.
“The idea for the show began to take shape when we considered how to present a cohesive yet unique body of work, created by three friends who share a passion for painting and a love of art,” says Doty, who invited her painting pals to join her in exhibiting their work in her studio. She sees this as the beginning of something special.
Classically trained, each artist continues to expand their own knowledge of painting through individual study. But it is through the sharing of what they have learned and then working side by side that they have been able to add another dimension to their collective understanding of art making. “For me, painting together is an opportunity to be more experimental, try new media or set up a certain challenge to explore,” says Tortorici. “It forces us out of our usual approach to painting,” says Hoffman.
Doty, having studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, built a successful national signage and graphic arts company called Doty and Associates, now owned and operated by her employees. Hoffman, a native of London, studied the classical art at the Academie Notre Dame des Champs in Paris before returning to further study in Southern California. She most recently won the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum Curators Choice Award in 2021. Tortorici followed her lifelong desire to paint after raising her three children. She was fortunate to learn the fundamentals of painting from living master David Leffel and continues to study privately with teachers from all over the world.
Hoffman, Doty and Tortorici will be available at the free reception at Doty Studio on March 29th. The artists can be reached through the email listed in contacts. Attached is a painting from each artist including: Twilight Meadows, oil on canvas, 24 x 30 by Annie Hoffman; Waterwalk, oil on canvas, 26 x 17 x 1.5d by Cheryl Doty, and The Road Less Traveled, oil on panel, 18 x 12 by Susan Tortorici.
