  • A live band and a caller
  • Enjoyable

  • Healthy for the body and brain
  • You don’t need a partner, most dancers pick a new partner for each dance

Co-sponsored by the Santa Barbara Recreation Department

Contra dance is a fun social dance with a live band and a caller. Enjoyable, good exercise, and you don’t need a partner. Dancers, bring your kids and parents. We have had 3 generations dancing at the same time.

Dance in the Carrillo Ballroom with the bouncy sprung floor (easy on the feet, knees and hips).

We are a community, so please help everyone get to dance. Don’t book ahead. Watch for people sitting on the side and ask them to dance! Reach out of your comfort zone to make folks feel welcome. You might make a life-long friend!

The band takes a break in the middle. At the end of each half, you can dance a waltz. And during the break, recorded music is played for East and West Coast swing dance, Country Dance, and more.

There are hundreds of dances, but you don’t need to know any of them. There is a free lesson at 6:10pm and at the dance, the caller will walk you through each dance, continuing to call the moves as the band starts up.

Every dance is a new experience.

The best description we’ve heard is that with each dance we build a carousel, then jump on and ride it. Fun and healthy for the brain and the body. Join us for great fun!
