The UCSB Jazz Ensemble presents a concert celebrating
female jazz composers, arrangers, and performers on the first day of Women’s History Month. Artists featured will include Melba Liston, Lil Hardin (Armstrong), Maria Schneider, Ayn Inserto, and Tokisho Akiyoshi. Los Angeles-based trumpet artists Barbara Laronga will join the ensemble as a featured soloist for Eliane Elias’s funky “Just Kidding”, Sherisse Rogers’ “Chacagliatu” and Harry James’ trumpet led “Struttin with some Barbecue”, originally made famous by Louis Armstrong and written by Lil Hardin. Other works to be featured are Berklee School of Music faculty Ayn Inserto’s “Blue Salt”, written for trombone quarter and rhythm section, Toshiko Akiyoshi’s blues shuffle “Tuning Up”, and Maria Schneider’s epic “Journey Home”. Come celebrate the women who made and continue to make jazz, and enjoy the talents of UCSB’s fantastic student musicians!
