Santa Barbara Opioid Safety Coalition Announces Chance to Win a $50 CVS Gift Card by Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs on October 23 to a CVS Medication Drop Box
Santa Barbara, CA – On Saturday, October 23rd the Santa Barbara Opioid Safety Coalition and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced the public opportunity to prevent pill misuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to a CVS medication take-back unit located in the Pharmacy Waiting Area of select CVS Pharmacies. To find a convenient disposal location near you, including select CVS locations, visit https://safe.pharmacy/drug-disposal/. Sites cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.
To enter for a chance to win a $50 CVS gift card, take a picture of the medication drop box and DM us on Instagram @opioidsafetysb or email us at vista@sbclinics.org. By submitting your picture, you give us permission to share your name and picture on our social media and website (opioidsafetysb.org) and also certify that you are 18 years old or older. A name will be randomly selected and the winner will be announced within one week of taking Back Day (by Monday, November 8th).
You can also go to one of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics listed below and ask for a free pre-paid safe medication disposal envelope (while supplies last). You can place all unused medications into the envelope, seal it carefully, and take the envelope to a U.S. Post Office or dropbox, or simply hand it to your U.S. postal carrier.

This October event is the DEA’s 22nd nationwide event since its inception 11 years ago.
To keep everyone safe, collection sites will follow local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
In addition to DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, there are many other ways to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs every day, including the 11,000 authorized collectors that are available all year long.
