Christ the King Episcopal Church
A memorial for lives lost to COVID-19 has been constructed at Christ the King Episcopal Church. The Memorial Circle and Cross at the church will be dedicated on Saturday, July 3, at 11 AM. The church is located at 5073 Hollister Avenue, next to Lane Farms. A short service of memorial and dedication will be held during which
names of those who died of COVID-19 will be read with the ringing of a chime accompanying each name. The occasion will also be used to remember others who died of some other cause but were not properly memorialized due to the pandemic. Their names will also be read with the ringing of the chime. The public is invited to attend this event and to submit names of those to be remembered and memorialized as we gather to grieve together and share our sorrow over lost loved ones. Those interested in submitting names should send them via email to episcopalctkrector@gmail.com. A light lunch will be provided for all who attend following the ceremony.
The memorial is a recumbent cross, raised up at an incline, surrounded by flowers in a raised bed surrounded by a low wall. The cross is pointed toward the altar of the church to emphasize the Christian practice of celebrating, at the altar, the work done by Jesus on a cross. The symbolism of a recumbent cross is seen in different ways: the cross may be a symbol of Jesus’ finished work—having procured our salvation, he has laid His cross down—or it is a symbol of how we are to take up our cross and follow Jesus—a cross carried over one’s shoulder would normally be in a horizontal position.
