She is extremely observant in details and is an art risk taker and experimenter. She’s inspired by Gerard Richter, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. Her art has depth and complexity created through her multi layering and texture. Her style is abstract expressionism using acrylics on canvas.
Painting has been an interest of Ann’s since she was quite young. She was lucky to grow up in Santa Barbara, and benefitted from the best teachers. In the mid 80’s she lived in the Midwest, where she was fascinated by the big skies, clouds and open spaces.
Ann Shelton Beth. She began painting landscapes there, which she exhibited at the Unity Gallery before returning to Santa Barbara 1991, where she adapted to painting the coastal landscape. But the open spaces of the Midwest have continued to influence her work, to give her paintings a feeling of space and quietness. Regarding the abstract work; She owes the development of that interest to Jim Armstrong, who was a brilliant abstract painter in Santa Barbara. With his encouragement, she branched out to include that element in her work.
