Study creeks at close range in Pamela Zwehl-Burke’s CROSSING series. Immerse yourself in a world of flora, reflections, and color in these large oil-stick paintings on paper. Glimpses at the ground while traversing a dense trail have been magnified, gerrymandered, and turned up onto walls, enveloping the gallery. Leaves and twigs travel from one panel to the next. Water ripples and flows, evoking sounds of an afternoon hike. Energetic lines and pools of color convey changing light and textures. Using a shallow field of view, scenes are flattened and then expanded via reflection. Fallen leaves floating on the water’s surface touch images of overhanging tree limbs, creating a tangle of actual and virtual. Brown creeks are transformed into the blue of reflected sky, mirroring the world beyond the surface of the water and beyond the surface of the paper. Designed to be hung in any orientation, these paintings present a perpetually changing view. Navigating a path on uneven ground, balancing on rocks, peering down into the shallows these experiences compel Zwehl-Burke to play with space, scale and composition, crossing from one vision to another. Artist reception and gallery talk, Friday, January 18, from 5 to 7:30 Join us at 6:30 for an informal talk with Pamela about her Crossing series. Small Works January 18 through March 10, 2019 Accompanying Pamela Zwehl-Burke’s CROSSING is an exhibition of small paintings by gallery artists. Using small scale as a lure, the artists entice the viewer to get close, creating an intimacy between viewer and art.
