Matthew Augustine Hoyne was born on June 19, 1965, to Eugenia Gladstone and John Reardon Hoyne. His parents were raised in Oak Park, Illinois, and in 1970 with their six children moved from the East Coast to Santa Barbara, California, where two more children were born, creating a family of eight children: Margaret, Moira, John, James, Matthew, Ruth, Peachy and Luke. Matthew attended Montecito Union School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel prior to joining the family’s move to Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1982, where he attended Eagle Hill School and then Riverview School in East Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Riverview offered a structured and supportive learning environment for moderate special needs students and believed that teenagers like Matthew with perceptually and intellectually based learning problems could acquire the variety of skills necessary to achieve a productive life.

Matthew subsequently worked in Boston at commercial banks prior to a long-term position with the Museum of Science. His time in Boston was notable for his extensive network of friend and colleagues who remained life-long friends. Matthew returned to the West coast to be closer to family, where he settled in Los Angeles and worked for Fried Asset Management and actively participated in Brentwood Presbyterian Church.

In 2016, Matthew moved back to his hometown of Santa Barbara and completed the Basic Yoga Teacher Training Program at the Santa Barbara Yoga Center. Matthew approached his cancer diagnosis with his lifelong determination to live life to its fullest extent. He comfortably spent his final month surrounded by friends and family at Serenity House where he died August 17, 2018.
