Jane Malmgren, 95, died peacefully in the early morning hours of November 11, 2012, at Valle Verde Retirement Community in Santa Barbara.
Born on September 4, 1917 in Alameda, California to Nicholas and Georgia Fleming, she was raised in Oakland with her brother, the late Harold Fleming of Sonora, Ca. She graduated from Oakland High School and later received a degree from California College of Arts and Crafts.
She married her late husband, Richard Malmgren in 1941. After WWII they designed and built their home, residing in La Canada, California for fifty years. Jane moved to Santa Barbara in 1999.

She delighted in expressing herself creatively throughout her life whether it be with quilt design, fiber arts or painting. She shared her talent and joy through teaching and mentoring. She taught Fine Arts at La Canada High School for ten years. Later in her life she was a very active member of the Foothill Quilters and had numerous quilts exhibited including a quilt selected for California Design ’76 in Los Angeles.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Susan Malmgren of Mountain View; her daughter Linda Solin; son-in-law, Loren and grandson, Kai of Santa Barbara.
Jane’s family is extremely grateful to the staff at Valle Verde for the love and care given to her these past several years.
