Hinda Kotlarchyk Cohen
3/4/1928 – 4/18/2011
Hinda passed away at Cottage Hospital from cancer and heart related problems. She and her husband, Allen, have been residents of Santa Barbara since 1980. Their careers have been in libraries. They met in the Serials Cataloging Section of the main building of New York Public Library and were married for forty years (4/27/71). She grew up in Floral Park, Nassau County, New York, at the Queens, New York city line, and graduated from New York University with a bachelor’s degree in history. Allen grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. After their marriage they went to Pennsylvania State University where they both had positions in the library. From there they went to Philadelphia. Hinda had a position in the library of the Franklin Institute science museum, while her husband had a position across Logan Square from the Franklin Institute, at the Free Library of Philadelphia. From there they came to Santa Barbara, and while Allen had a position at the library at UCSB, Hinda had positions at the County Law Library, and then the Santa Barbarbara Community College Library. Both retired, and decided to consider Santa Barbara their home, even though there were continued strong ties to the New York City area. During that time that Hinda’s health was better they would go back to New York City twice a year to indulge in their love of classical music and opera, the theatre, the art world, and any number of ethnic cuisines, especially Chinese and Italian. They were strong supporters of the Music Academy of the West here in Santa Barbara. Hinda was a life long Democrat and political liberal, union member and supporter of unions, and a strong believer in social and economic justice. Her funeral at Santa Barbara Cemetery will be held on Friday May 6, 2011, 2 pm. Donations in her memory can be made to Cancer Center of Santa Barbara and the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara.
