Gary Walter Deley
Born June 28, 1937, the second child of William and Ruth Shoup Deley, Gary Deley grew up in Altadena, California. He graduated from Stanford University in 1959 and returned to earn his PhD in electrical engineering. Gary joined General Research Corporation, where he worked his entire career, becoming Director of Santa Barbara Operations.
Gary found joy in pursuing projects, whether building a model railroad or landscaping the yard or pulling a trailer many times across the United States and Canada. He and his wife Penny sought roadside adventures from the Alcan Highway to Cape Breton Island. He planned their trips in detail, and he calmly and resourcefully dealt with the unexpected, like nine flat tires in Alaska or their van conversion burning up on a mountain road in Wyoming.
Gary maintained his sense of humor all his life. Even near the end, he and his family were able to share a good laugh.
Upon his death, July 26, 2007, Gary left Penny, his wife of 47 years, sons David Deley and Logan De Ley, brother Warren DeLey, nephew William De Ley, and nieces Carolyn Diaz and Kimberly Anderson.
Internment will be private. Arrangements by Neptune Society. Friends wanting to honor Gary might consider Hospice of Santa Barbara, 520 W. Junipero, Santa Barbara, CA 93105 or Direct Relief International, 305 La Patera Lane, Goleta, CA 93107.
