Don Nelson
Don Nelson (June 10, 1932- August 2, 2008) passed away peacefully at Serenity House in Santa Barbara from complications of pancreatic and lung cancer. Born in New York City of Swedish parents, he grew up facing the uncertainties of an economic depression, World War politics, and early death in the family.
After completing four years of submarine duty in the Navy, at twenty-two he was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Cooper Union School of Engineering after which he was hired at and eventually became a partner in the Dames & Moore engineering firm. He is perhaps most proud of being an Eagle Scout and teaching at City College in New York.
He is survived by dear friends and caring family and if Don were to leave us with the feelings most close to his heart, they would include: the next cruise, Brooklyn, David, human rights and dignity, skiing, cranberry sauce, Arlene and Dick, lunch with Lisa, lemon meringue pie, and most recently Serenity House.
