Alice Kaoru (Hayashida) Nakagawa
Alice Kaoru (Hayashida) Nakagawa, 98, passed away peacefully at home December 17, 2008.
Alice was born May 3, 1910 in Los Angeles and had five sisters and one brother.She married John Nakagawa in 1933. With their 3 young children, they endured the U.S. internment camps at Manzanar and Tule Lake. They settled in Santa Barbara in 1946. Alice was a homemaker talented in sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cooking. She was blessed with a sweet, patient nature and a good sense of humor.
Alice is survived by her husband John Nakagawa, children Morio Nakagawa and his wife Johanna, Richard Nakagawa, Gloria Nakagawa Peyrat and her husband Adrian, and grandchildren Alan Peyrat, Ann Peyrat, Kim Nakagawa, Jon Nakagawa, Lea Nakagawa, and great-grandchildren Devendra Peyrat, Nalini Peyrat, and Alena Gates. Alice has one surviving sister and many relatives in Japan.
Our special thanks to Alice’s wonderful caregiver, Yolanda Tipton, for her loving help the past four years, previous caregiver Laura Salerno, and the Visiting Nurse and Hospice team, particularly Elizabeth Swede, R.N.
In accordance with her wishes, no memorial is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara or Sansum Diabetes Research Institute.
