Well Read Red
Pete Johnson (far right) gets all our thanks for helping us create the inaugural Well Read Indy Pale Ale. Our brew team, some pictured here — Suzanne Cloutier (left), Megan Packard Hillegas, Alex Melton, Emily Cosentino, and Tanya Spears Guiliacci — worked in turns to stir, mix, filter, and clean the giant vat of hot water, barley, and hops. “There is so much manual labor involved,” Melton told us. In between times, the team learned from Johnson the difference between an IPA and a double IPA (the amount of hops) and how fruit-flavored beers are made (some add fruit, others add fruit flavorings). The Well Read will carry a reddish hue from roasting the grains, said Cloutier, to add some “bite.” Indy ale goes on tap in time for Solstice, so stay tuned.
