The Spirit of Fiesta

Growing up in the Rey family means dance is a way of life. Eighteen-year-old Alina grew up watching her mother dance and instruct students at La Casa de la Raza for performances in Fiesta, and in 1998, she cheered on her older sister as the Fiesta’s chosen Spirit. And now it is her turn to shine.

Alina has danced with Linda Vega Dance Studio for more than 10 years, but was shy as a child and had no desire for the spotlight until she said her mother “gave me no alternative and said I had to get on that stage.” Her charming personality and natural flair with flamenco earned Alina the coveted role as this year’s Spirit of Fiesta, and now the girl who used to hide in the wings can’t wait for the opening ceremonies at La Fiesta Peque±a and the moment she steps out of the Mission doors for her solo performance. As the Spirit of Fiesta, Alina is looking forward to the friendly atmosphere the city takes on, meeting people, and dancing in as many as five performances per day. Alina said, “Not only do I love dancing, I love my community and my city, so this is an honor to be able to express both loves in Fiesta.”
