The ribbon was cut on the 43-acre Gaviota Village on 9/25, officially making it part of Gaviota State Park. Made possible thanks to a partnership between Santa Barbara County, the Trust for Public Land, California State Parks, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Goleta Valley Land Trust, the deal allows Gaviota Village, a commercially zoned and particularly scenic slice of land that borders Gaviota State Park, to be permanently protected by the parks system.

Marie Panec, an Oak Park Unified School District Board Trustee and a professor of biology at Moorpark College, has announced her candidacy for the 24th District of the U.S. Congress, which covers much of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and is currently held by Elton Gallegly, a Republican. Panec, a Democrat, has advocated for education funding and a commitment to the development of science and technology. The primaries for the 2010 House of Representatives elections will be held in June of next year, with the main election taking place in November.

The Carpinteria Valley Water District filed paperwork on 9/17 announcing its intent to sell up to 1,000 acre-feet of its 2,000 acre-foot annual allotment of State Water. The district had sold an option to Plains Exploration Company for a development planned near La Puris-ma, but the deal fell through. A new buyer has not yet been confirmed, but the sale could result in a significant revenue source for the cash-strapped district.
