TOP SPORTING EVENTS: AUGUST 24-30
The high-goal polo season is ending and the college soccer season is gathering steam this week.
After two weeks of action, four teams still have a chance to win the 100th Bombardier Pacific Coast Open trophy at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. In the semifinal matches Thursday, ERG (3-0) will face Grant’s Farm (2-1), and Lucchese (3-0) will take on Zacara (1-2). The winning teams will play for the championship at 2 p.m. Sunday. Four other teams are vying to appear in the consolation final on Saturday.
In college soccer, the Westmont women have high hopes for this season and will get it started today (Tue., Aug. 24) with a home game against Trinity Western of British Columbia.
There will be a pair of soccer double-headers on Friday. At UCSB’s Harder Stadium, the Gaucho women will face St. Joseph’s (Pennsylvania) at 5 p.m., and the men will square off against the Mexico U-20 National Team in an exhibition match at 7:30 p.m. SBCC will open its season at Goleta’s Girsh Park because the grand reopening of La Playa Stadium is a week away. The Vaqueros will play College of the Sequoias, the women at 2 p.m. and the men at 5 p.m.
Hardy athletes will be out in force on the waterfront this weekend, tackling the long course of the Santa Barbara Triathlon on Saturday morning and the sprint course on Sunday. The last event of the final day will be the parent-child sprint, a chance for youngsters to do a triathlon escorted by their parents.
