Sports Update: Nov. 5-12
Bishop Diego Forced to Travel Throughout Playoffs
Santa Barbara High put forth a championship effort last Friday night and has been rewarded with a home game to kick off the Dons’ first appearance in the CIF football playoffs since 2008. They will shine as the “Golden Tornado” – a tradition for SBHS playoff teams since the 1920s – when they play host to the Cathedral Phantoms on Friday night, November 9, at Peabody Stadium.
The Dons defeated Dos Pueblos, 24-17, to earn a share of the Channel League title. Dos Pueblos also will be home Friday against Culver City. The Dons (8-2) and Chargers (7-3) are competing in the Western Division CIF-SS Ford Championships. Lompoc, which has won 30 consecutive games, is the top-seeded team in the division.
Bishop Diego is No. 1 seed in the Northwestern Division, but the Cardinals (10-0) will have to play all their remaining games on the road because of a CIF sanction. The CIF deemed a flyer touting the school constituted “undue influence” on potential student-athletes. Paul Harrington, the head of Bishop Diego, took issue with the CIF’s ruling in a message posted on the school’s website. The Cardinals will travel to South Torrance on Friday.
Several area teams are also competing the CIF playoffs this week in girls tennis and volleyball, and boys water polo. See the following schedule.
