Students at UCSB protested on February 15 the university’s
involvement in military efforts related to the Iraq war. Almost
1,000 showed up at Pardall Tunnel in Isla Vista to hear speeches
about various antiwar efforts. But the ensuing
march across campus and shutdown of Highway 217
were the event’s highlights. For about an hour, California Highway
Patrol (CHP) and students stood in a stalemate, with some
murmurings of pushing the march to the 101. After more speeches,
students returned to campus and converged on Cheadle Hall, where
Vice Chancellor Michael Young spoke on behalf of Chancellor Henry
Yang in support of free speech.

Police arrested two people who took part in the
antiwar protest: former UCSB student Jesse Carrieri and women’s
studies professor Mireille Miller-Young, both of whom were
reportedly arrested for overstepping the barricade created by CHP
and UCPD officers. Though Vice Chancellor Michael Young announced
to the crowd outside Cheadle Hall that both had been released the
afternoon of the protest, Carrieri said police held him on charges
of resisting arrest until 8 p.m. that night. UCSB Chancellor Henry
Yang drove Carrieri back to Isla Vista after his release.
Miller-Young declined to comment on her arrest.
