Groundbreaking efforts to create a more sustainable future for commercial fishing will be announced on Thursday morning, when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses a Santa Barbara setting to launch funding initiatives for marketing studies of two new business models designed to help both consumers and fishermen. The first, in which Santa Barbara will play a major role, is the analysis of the development of community-supported fisheries, where consumers buy directly and regularly from fishermen. The second marketing study will examine ways of increasing the value of traditionally less profitable fisheries by developing new ways to market such fish and other value-adding strategies.
