UCSB psychology professor Michael Gazzaniga was named a recipient of Germany’s Humboldt Research Prize last week in recognition of advancements in the understanding of the interactions across the hemispheres of the human brain he made while studying people who have undergone split-brain surgery. Gazzaniga, director of UCSB’s SAGE Center for the Study of the Mind, will receive a [l 60,000 ($93,954.31) prize and opportunities to collaborate with German scientists on future projects.

A majority of the 5,000 postdoctoral researchers at the University of California voted to authorize the Postdoctoral Research Organize (a division of the United Auto Workers union) to represent them in bargaining talks with the statewide university system over such matters as maternity leave, wages, health insurance, and sick leave. The announcement came on 7/7, along with news that the union is awaiting certification from the Public Employment Relations Board before such bargaining can begin.
