Sports Highlights: April 20-May 1
UCSB hosts a three-game Big West softball series this weekend (April 21-22) against league-leading Pacific. The visiting Tigers (7-2) are a game ahead of the Gauchos (6-3) in the standings. Led by freshman pitcher Shelby Wisdom, the Gauchos have won five straight games. Wisdom (16-12) is two wins shy of a school record. The teams play a double-header Saturday and a single game Sunday.
The Santa Barbara Breakers, off to a 2-0 start in the West Coast Basketball League, face the Long Beach Rockets (2-1) Saturday night at San Marcos High. The Breakers got a Wilt Chamberlain-like performance (33 points and 33 rebounds) from Greg Somogyi in their 108-89 victory over the Hollywood Beachdawgs last week. Former Breakers guard Zack Marbury is on the Long Beach roster.
SBCC is hosting the Western State Conference track and field championship prelims today (Friday, April 20) at La Playa Stadium. In high school track, the County Championships will take place Saturday at Carpinteria High.
