In 2006, I traveled through Uganda for nearly a month with photographer Connie Aramaki to cover the presidential elections and spend some time investigating the bizarre civil war that’s ravaged Northern Uganda for decades. Led by madman Joseph Kony and carried out by his Lord’s Resistance Army, the war has scarred both the landscape and mindset of Northern Uganda, leaving in its wake a sea of refugee camps and a collective psyche of fear, especially among all of those poor young souls who were swept up and turned into child soldiers or, perhaps worse, their unwilling concubines.

With news that the Obama administration is sending a team of combat-ready advisors into Northern Uganda to track down Kony once and for all, it seemed a good time to republish this story. Unfortunately, not much has changed.
