Construction of Cathedral Oaks Road Bridge Replacement In the Second Supervisorial District Begins Today
Construction begins April 28, 2014 to replace the bridge on Cathedral Oaks Road located immediately west of Turnpike Road near the entrance to Tucker’s Grove Park. The new bridge will accommodate standard lane widths and improve pedestrian and bicycle access.
This project was originally planned to seismically retrofit the bridge based on State inspection and recommendations. Subsequent investigation discovered reactive aggregate in the bridge, necessitating full replacement.
Construction will be performed by Granite Construction Company, and will span over two-seasons due to environmental restrictions. Work begins April 28, 2014, and is scheduled to finish in February 2016, contingent on weather. Working hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, turn pockets will be removed, and the traffic signal will be replaced with temporary four-way stops. Drivers should be aware of reduced speed zones and increased traffic control when driving through the construction site, with possible 5 to 10 minute traffic delays. Public Works encourages the travelling public to use an alternate route whenever possible.
This $3.2 million dollar project will be funded through a Federal Highway Bridge Program grant for $2.7 million. The remaining $470,000 will come from matching State Prop 1B Seismic funding and Santa Barbara County Measure A revenue.
