Winter Crafts in Los Olivos and Santa Ynez Libraries

Children can make an acorn top or decorate a frame with acorns at Los Olivos library from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. Acorn toy tops are made by inserting a small twig into a (predrilled) hole in an acorn. The picture frame craft will be designed and decorated by each child with Valley and Live Oak acorns, and acorn tops, pine cones, and other materials from local native plants.

At Santa Ynez Library, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, children can make a Chumash bullroarer, called a ʼ axmɨšɨš , with designs inspired by traditional Chumash symbols and decoration. ‘axmɨšɨš (bullroarers) were used to warn Chumash people of danger and to call to people together for gathering and ceremonies. The decorated stick is attached to a cord and swung around to make a unique sound.

Los Olivos Library is located in the Grange Hall at 2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue in Los Olivos; Santa Ynez Library is at 3598 Sagunto Street, Santa Ynez, next door to the SYV Historical Museum. Both craft events are free and open to the public.
