Healthcare advocates, including representatives of Health Care for All, Pacific Pride, and the Women’s Political Committee, convened at Cottage Hospital on 4/28 to protest looming statewide cuts to Medi-Cal, California’s low-income health insurance program. The cuts could, for example, deprive some disabled children and people with genetic disorders from getting necessary medications. About 6.5 million people are enrolled in Medi-Cal. Annual premiums for a middle-of-the-road, employer-sponsored family health plan in California increased 33.6 percent between 2001 and 2005from $7,898 to $10,551according to new study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The median income of family health insurance policyholders increased about 9 percent.
