Bill Banning, previously an assistant superintendent in the Solana Beach School District, has been chosen by the Goleta Union School District Board of Trustees to replace retiring superintendent, Dr. Kathleen Boomer.

Banning, whose hiring is expected to be approved at Wednesday’s board meeting, will start on July 1. As the new district’s new superintendent, Banning will work with 3,700 students across nine elementary schools and with a $36 million yearly budget.

“I’m very pleased to have been selected as the finalist for this position and look forward to contributing to the positive partnership and outstanding work being done for the children of the community by the district’s teachers, support staff, administrators, and Board of Trustees,” Banning said, in a prepared statement. “I believe my experience and passion for public education will serve the community well.”

Banning has worked in education for many years, beginning his career by teaching junior high school kids and later serving as a principal at a middle school and an elementary school.

“We are very excited to welcome Bill to the District,” said Susan Epstein, the board president, in a prepared statement. “After an extensive search process, the Board believes his qualifications and character make him a great fit for our District.”
