Help for Chad Refugees

Ninety-thousand refugees from the vicious civil war in the Central African Republic were living in UN refugee camps in south Chad during Chad Relief Foundation’s campaign a year ago. They are still there — the forgotten refugees for whom there is no media attention, celebrity presence, or geopolitical significance.

Since 2007 Chad Relief Foundation (CRF) has funded 30 projects in the fields of health, education, food, agriculture, and recreation. Last month the dollar value of our assistance topped one million. In my 11 trips to Chad, working with Chadian people and the brave relief workers from the United Nations in this despotic and dangerous area has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life — a life that spans eight and a half decades.

This message constitutes CRF’s annual appeal: Funds raised will enable us to focus significant resources on education, particularly for girls and young women. This effort involves persuading parents to send their children to school, grants to girls to keep them in high school, university scholarships, and comprehensive support of the Beureuh middle school located near Amboko and Gondje camps. We will also continue to provide medicines, medical equipment, vitamins, and nutritional supplements for children and pregnant and lactating women.
