Mountain Drive along the backroads of Santa Barbara will be closed between Sheffield Reservoir and the intersection with State Route 192 (Foothill Road) to the west on Monday through Tuesday, July 1-2. Caltrans states that drainage work in the area is complete and that the section of the road will be paved, causing the two-day closure.
Alternate routes involve crossing over the Riviera and encountering the maze of hillside streets. If coming from Santa Barbara, at the 192 and Mountain Drive intersection, motorists are advised to head to the right, and take narrow Mountain Drive to Tremonto, over the hill to Mission Ridge Road, which leads to the Riviera Theatre and El Encanto Hotel to the left, then down to Alameda Padre Sierra (APS) and town.
If coming from Montecito, Caltrans advises heading up Hillcrest, the road opposite Sheffield Reservoir, and over the hill to Mission Ridge Road. Left lies the theater, but various roads also wind down to APS and the Santa Barbara Bowl.
The alternative, clearly, is to avoid the backroad for a couple of days.
