Jeff Shelton to Design New Taqueria & Bar

Sun Oct 17, 2021 | 03:55pm

TACO TUESDAY EVERY DAY

What’s more fun than a new taqueria and tequila bar coming soon to State Street? The Jeff Shelton rendering of the forthcoming eatery! Said to be opening at the former Casablanca location on the corner of State and Ortega, here’s Jeff’s drawing of Augie’s, complete with blooming jacarandas, bristling palm trees, and a begging pup doing tricks in the crosswalk. Classic Shelton style on a classic State Street corner!

STARRY STARRY STEARNS WHARF

One of my favorite local artists puts his own spin on iconic Santa Barbara landscapes. This starry scene is one of Chris Potter’s latest renditions, a 24″x36″ oil painting on linen of a well-known view from Stearns Wharf, with touches of the Funk Zone and sparkles of the Riviera beyond, awash in swirls and colors reminiscent of Van Gogh. If you’re not already familiar with his work, visit Chris on Instagram and join his legions of fans.

HALLOWEEN CHEER

Here’s a fun way to get into the holiday spirit! The Lampson Team of Homeowners Financial Group, powered by the indefatigable Austin Lampson, is hosting a pumpkin-carving contest. They’re inviting folks to grab a pumpkin, carve it, and post a photo on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #LAMPSONTEAMHALLOWEEN. Entry deadline is Wednesday, October 27. One creepy carver will win a $100 Grubhub gift card. So sharpen your tools, get creative, and give it your best shot.

BEST WEEKEND

Another opportunity for upcoming fun and games is the Independent’s inaugural Best of Santa Barbara® Scavenger Hunt. Next weekend, Saturday-Sunday, October 23-24, the streets of Santa Barbara will turn into a playground as teams of four try to solve a series of 35 Santa Barbara–based clues and puzzles in an allotted 35-hour timeframe. This family-friendly socially distanced DIY adventure is a celebration of the winners and runners-up of the Indy’s 2021 Best Of Santa Barbara® Readers’ Poll, as seen in our big glossy issue publishing this Thursday, October 21. Grab some friends and give it a shot!

RANCHO IN THE REAR

Just when I think I’ve heard every real estate term in the book, something new pops up to put me in my place. This new Mesa listing at 810 Gravilla Drive, offered by Scott Williams, is a charming Spanish-style home that can function either as a duplex or a single-family residence. I was mystified when I read that it had a rear rancho (???), but when I learned that the grassy, fully enclosed, courtyard-style backyard is referred to as “a rancho,” I was tickled to add another piece of terminology to my burgeoning real estate dictionary.

Whether you’re resting up for the scavenger hunt, prepping your pumpkin, or visiting open houses, check out this week’s issue for all the news and information you need to own October!
