BACK TO SANTA BARBARA
Keith Hamm’s Heart of the Home column this week takes a look at ways that some ex–Santa Barbarans have been able to move back to town since the start of the pandemic. Calling the quest to get back to Santa Barbara “the Rubik’s cube” for many, local realtor Josiah Hamilton talks about how the ability to work from anywhere has provided an angle for some folks who have figured out ways to return.
WHAT’S INSIDE?
The Leave Some Character Instagram account gathers interesting properties from around the country and tosses them together with little or no commentary. One of their fun mash-ups — “What’s Inside Wednesday” — consists of listings from Zillow that only offer exterior photos, leaving much to the imagination. A former schoolhouse in Pickens, South Carolina, listed at $195,000 and a freemason’s lodge in Madison, Indiana, with a price tag of $79,900 are a couple of examples. The boarded-up beauty shown above has a listing price of $19,900.
Although no interior photos are provided, it’s a six-bedroom, three-bath home of 4,567 square feet located in Macon, Georgia. As expected, the comments on the account are half the fun.
ON THE MARKET CLOSE TO HOME
While we may not have any $19,900 fixer-uppers here on the South Coast, we do have a wide range of styles, sizes, and prices of homes available. Here’s a sample of just a few listings for sale right now. The two-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath condo shown above is in a community called Pueblo del Amanecer on the Westside near Santa Barbara City College. With a fireplace, a large backyard with a lemon tree, and being listed at $719,000, it won’t last long. Contact Hitchcock & Associates of Compass for details.

ON THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM
Also in our own backyard is the impressive “Casa Paloma” in Hope Ranch, a 13-acre bluff-top parcel with nearly 400 feet of oceanfront overlooking ocean and island views. The photo above shows a rendering of the mid-construction compound that includes a five-bedroom, 7,400-square-foot main house plus pool, cabana, guesthouse, tennis court, and much more. Co-listed by the Dusty Baker Group of Sothebys and Sally Hanseth of Coldwell Banker for $33,950,000, this is a rare listing indeed.
RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE
Between Montecito’s coveted Hedgerows sits this 1920s George Washington Smith–designed estate with four bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths as well as enchanting gardens outside and beautiful details within. The living room has a curved wood beamed ceiling with a rock-walled fireplace and French doors leading to an inviting outdoor seating area with a firepit. Listed by Cristal Clarke of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties for $5,850,000 and located at 175 Miramar Avenue. See this beauty on the cover of this week’s real estate section, and take a look here for even more photos and details.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
A quick PSA from Scout, who reminds us that even though the calendar says September, it’s still sunny summer in Santa Barbara. And yes, we CAN wear white after Labor Day!
No matter what you’re wearing, there’s something for everyone in this week’s issue of the Indy. The Planned Parenthood Book Sale is on the front cover, and the real estate section in the back is chock-full of even more houses to drool over and dream about. Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for visiting!
