SBCC to Break Ground at West Campus
New Building, the Last Funded by Measure V, will House Offices and 23 Classrooms
City College will break ground on Wednesday at a West Campus building that will house offices and some 23 classrooms. The new building is the last construction project funded by Measure V, a bond measure passed in June 2008 that gave SBCC $77.2 million to renovate structures including its Garvin Theater, learning resources center, and snack shop, as well as its East Campus humanities building.
Located next to Garvin Theater and West Campus’ main bus loop, the approximately 30,000-square-foot building consists of a three-story east wing and a two-story west wing connected by a pedestrian bridge. The “green” building, estimated to be complete in January 2018, will be built according to Leadership Energy & Development Design (LEED) standards. The classroom and office building project replaces aging portable classrooms that previously occupied the space, SBCC spokesperson Joan Galvan said.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, SBCC President Lori Gaskin will move the first scoop of dirt with a backhoe and other hard hat-clad dignitaries will break the soil with shovels.
