City firefighters responded at about 9:19 a.m. Monday morning to a report of a broken gas line outside the La Cumbre Plaza Apartments located at 120 N. La Cumbre Road. First responders arrived at the scene to find that a construction crew working on the city’s sewer line replacement project had accidentally cut a 3/4-inch-wide gas service line outside the apartment complex, City Fire Captain Gary Pitney said.
Firefighters notified the gas company, evacuated those residents whose apartments bordered the leak, and advised nearby neighbors to close their doors and windows and to “shelter in place.” Gas company officials arrived on scene an hour later. City police closed La Cumbre Road between State Street and Via Lucero until the flow of gas had stopped by 11:00 a.m. Evacuations were lifted, and no injuries were reported.
