This Thursday, November 5th, The Wild Reeds emanated songs of love and Hot Buttered Rum inspired some hootin’-good bluegrass dancing inside the brick walls of SOhO.
Los Angeles folk-rock band, The Wild Reeds, kicked off the night. The band is composed of three leading females, Kinsey Lee, Sharon Silva, and Mackenzie Howe who sang, played guitar, accordion, and banjo, along with a rocking percussion section made up of Nick Jones and Nick Phakpiseth. The ladies took turns leading the band in beautiful three part harmonies that uplifted the soul, creating a full body-soul aesthetic experience. But the band didn’t sing sweetly the whole set. Some songs, like the haunting “When I Go,” were actually quiet heavy and were accompanied by distorted guitar solos which cut through the acoustics and energized the audience. The integrity of the music was so present; it was refreshing to hear lyrics and melodies that held the pure intention to go deeper into and comfort the earthy soul that we all hold within.
Hot Buttered Rum took the stage to close the night, and the party really started to get going when they did. The bluegrass crowd came out in full force – let’s just say if you wanted to steal a collection of vintage flannels from a group of people, this would have been a prime night, with overalls, moustaches, and cowboy hats, boots, and chaps to spare. Hot Buttered Rum brought out the stand up bass and the fiddle and the show started cranking on numbers like “Busted in Utah.” The fiddler let loose and the whole crowd jigged and kicked their feet, while the singer spat vocals with twang and intensity. The band’s exciting mix of bluegrass and rock kept everyone riled up all night.
Catch both bands on tour this weekend in San Diego or check their websites for more dates.
