For about eight years, the Braille Institute — with the help of instructors such as Tracy Alfino (pictured above) — has been offering classes on Apple devices to its partly or fully visually impaired students. The iPad class, which can pose a big learning curve, successfully teaches students how to use and navigate the devices through specific gestures, VoiceOver mode, and Siri. Along with an iPad loaner program, the school also offers the flexibility of one-on-one tutoring if the timing of classes doesn’t work for some students. Prior to Apple devices becoming adaptive for the blind, third-party products were necessary to use them efficiently. Now with a little practice, folks can use the built-in accessibility features to help make life a little easier and remain connected in our visual world. See brailleinstitute.com.
