As the neighbor of a short-term vacation rental property, I can attest to the disruptive nature of the enterprise. Week-long parties are not uncommon at said property — multiply by several times a year, and imagine the toll it takes on the neighborhood’s patience.
I do not necessarily blame the vacationers — they have come to relax and revel in our beautiful city — unfortunately at the expense of the full-time residents around them, who have to endure the noise and yet find a way to get up in the morning and go to work!
Vacation rental owner greed/ignorance/indifference is the likely culprit — particularly if the property owner (as is the case in my neighborhood) does not live nearby and thus is not privy to, nor in control of, abating the nightly revelry.
Suffering neighbor’s options are: (1) call the cops (straining resources), (2) in-person visit to request quiet (and hope vacationers are friendly/accommodating and not too drunk), (3) endure and operate in cranky, sleep deprived mode and post equally cranky editorials in local paper, or (4) ask the city to please, please support its year-round taxpaying citizens who just want to thrive and enjoy their once peaceful neighborhood.
