The two suspects who were arrested following a shooting Monday evening in Isla Vista have been charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, first degree burglary, and assault with the use of a deadly weapon, the District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday. They also were charged with special allegations of personal use of a firearm and that the crimes were committed in association with a gang.
Authorities say 19-year-old Jose Gutierrez of Goleta and 22-year-old James Taylor of Lompoc showed up to an apartment complex on the 6515 Sabado Tarde Unit 4 on Monday night, and a drug-related fight broke out.
As a result, two 22-year-old Gauchos (one recent graduate and one current student), who lived in the apartment and apparently knew Gutierrez, sustained gunshot wounds. They were later transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries; one had been shot in the chest and the other in the abdomen. Their current condition is unclear and their identity has not been released.
Gutierrez and Taylor both sustained head injuries from the fight and were ultimately arrested at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. They have since been transported to County Jail. The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday. Taylor had two probation warrants and is being held without bail. Gutierrez is booked on a $1.6 million bail.
