Little Puddles, Big Problem

Elings should take care of the problems at the landfill before the city allows it to spend money to take over Las Positas Public Park. Recent rains revealed just how unprepared Las Positas’s closed landfill is for the wet season. Ponds and puddles are not allowed to gather, but after the recent rains the park looked like Lake Elings. The roads and parking lots collected rainfall and expedited departure of dirty runoff into the closest surface drain and straight down to Arroyo Burro Creek. Some of the drains are in the field areas where sewer sludge was mixed in with soil. Gross. And to think all this is going to eventually get to the beach is just sickening.

Something is going on between the city and Elings with the recent private lease agreement of the Las Positas Municipal Park. But favoritism aside, the city should not pay to repair the sinking infrastructure of Elings Park atop the landfill. If any more money is spent on this dump site it should be to protect the Arroyo Burro creek and beach area from the leaking pollution.

The public is cleaning up Elings Park while the city gives our public park to them. This does not seem right. Elings should take care of its park, and the city should take care of the public park. This is not square dancing, so let’s stick to our own partners and responsibilities.
