Following on the success of this summer’s Starting Here: A Selection of Distinguished Artists from UCSB, a sprawling and impressive alumni show, UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum has assembled an outstanding lineup of five exhibitions, all of which open on September 12. Barton Myers: Works of Architecture and Urbanism takes advantage of the extensive archive Myers donated to the museum in 2000 to examine and celebrate almost 50 years of influential work, ranging from concert halls and theaters to urban projects and steel houses, all created in Myers’s distinctive modern idiom. UCSB grad Eric Beltz will be the museum’s 2014 artist-in-residence, and his presence will be felt through a project called The Cave of Treasures, which combines drawing, wood, concrete, and live plants in order to encourage a meditative state in viewers. Bollywood 101: The Visual Culture of Bollywood Film Posters is exactly what it sounds like and will be accompanied by a variety of screenings and discussions. Meanwhile, Surface: The Handcrafted Object brings together a range of sculptures united by an appreciation of the role of process and the artist’s hand. The exhibit will include work by Robert Arneson and Beatrice Wood, among many others. Finally, the museum will showcase its holdings on paper with Observations: Travel Sketches from the Architecture and Design Collection. An all-purpose opening reception for this vibrant slate of offerings will take place on Thursday, October 2. Call 893-2951 or visit www.museum.ucsb.edu.
