[UPDATE, 2 p.m.]: Goleta spokesperson Valerie Kushnerov issued another statement a short while ago explaining that although a review of animal prints around Lake Los Carneros has been inconclusive, authorities still have reason to believe a cougar was indeed sighted yesterday in the area.
Kushnerov also offered this tip: “If you happen to encounter a mountain lion/cougar, quietly back away. If you have a child or animal with you, do not bend down to pick them up. Just pick them up and make your presence/stature as large as possible (QUIETLY!)”
[ORIGINAL REPORT]: The City of Goleta is asking residents to be on the lookout after a possible cougar sighting Wednesday morning at Lake Los Carneros. “We are urging residents to use caution while in this area, particularly with kids and pets,” said city spokesperson Valerie Kushnerov. “We are asking the public to report any sightings to the Sheriff’s Department at 911.”
No additional information is available at this time, she explained.
