The Assisteens are a group of boys and girls who attend various junior high and high schools in Santa Barbara. These teens put in their required community service hours by helping with the various programs Assistance League supports.
The Assisteens raised the money for the event by making and selling body lotion during the holiday season. They sold over 170 containers of lotion, for a profit of $354. This will help cover the cost of the band, Jazz Plus, who will play music from the 30’s and 40’s. This is music that the seniors love. Also, it will cover the cost of decorations, refreshments and flowers. Several Assistance League members will meet with the teens early on Sunday, April 28th, to teach them how to and help them make corsages and boutonnieres, which will be presented to the seniors at the Prom. A dance instructor, who helped last year, will once again meet with the teens and teach them how to dance properly and support the seniors as they dance.
This was a special night for the teens and seniors. They loved the event. The teens not only enjoyed the dancing, but also loved hearing stories that the seniors shared about their lives. They received a wonderful thank you card from the residents and staff of Wood Glen Hall. One senior said “thank you for making us feel young again”. Another said, “you all got me to dance when I thought I could never dance again. I had the most wonderful time, I will never forget it.” You can tell from the above quotes that it was a night to remember. The Assisteens are looking forward to another such “Senior Prom” on April 28th.
