When wine regions get serious, they start hosting seminars. The Urban Wine Trail crosses that threshold on February 16, when, 10 a.m.-noon at the Goodman Reed Motorcars garage in the Funk Zone, a panel of Santa Barbara–based winemakers — namely Christian Garvin of Oreana Winery, Craig Jaffurs of Jaffurs Wine Cellars, Doug Margerum of Margerum Wine Company, Martin Brown of Kalyra, Dave Potter of Municipal Winemakers, and Bruce McGuire of Santa Barbara Winery — will gather to discuss and share the splendors and strategies of syrah, which is grown throughout the county, from the hot Happy Canyon to the cool Sta. Rita Hills. That same evening, 5:30-9 p.m., the rest of the Urban Wine Trail wineries will join those producers to pour for a grand tasting event that will also feature food, art, music, an auction to benefit the Arts Fund, and much more than syrah. For tickets and more info, see urbanwinetrailsb.com or artsfundsb.org.
