Football Showdown at Dos Pueblos

Thu Nov 01, 2012 | 08:00am

UCSB puts one of the nation’s youngest basketball teams on the floor tonight (Thu., Nov. 1) when the Gaucho men play La Verne University in an exhibition game at the Thunderdome. Their probable starting lineup includes three freshmen – point guard Dalanté Dunklin, and forwards Michael Bryson and Taran Brown – sophomore post Alan Williams, and junior guard Kyle Boswell. A week later, the Gauchos will play at LSU.

Westmont College’s women, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA preseason coaches’ poll, open their basketball season at 6 p.m. Friday against Bethesda. The Warrior women defeated Pepperdine in an exhibition game at Malibu this week, 67-60. Tugce Canitez, the reigning NAIA Player of the Year, pounded the NCAA Division I Waves with 25 points and 18 rebounds. Canitez was on Turkey’s national team at the London Olympics. Because of a scheduling conflict, Westmont’s men will not be playing Friday night. They will open their season at the Las Vegas Tip-Off Classic on November 9.

UCSB’s women make their season debut against Vanguard, the NAIA’s No. 4-ranked team, on Monday night.

Biola will visit Westmont on Friday afternoon in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer semifinal.

Dos Pueblos tries to wrap up the outright Channel League football championship Friday night against Santa Barbara, which is fighting for a CIF playoff berth.

Runners, start tapering your workouts – the fourth Santa Barbara International Marathon is only nine days away.
