If you’ve consumed music in Santa Barbara in the past two decades, chances are you know Spencer the Gardener. Spencer Barnitz’s genre-bending blend of surfy twang, Latin grooves, island vibes, and Cali pop has become an area favorite, popping up at more parties, festivals, and clubs than we can wrap our heads around. On Breaking My Own Heart, fans get an expansive (and beautifully mixed) collection that runs the gamut we’ve come to associate with the band’s vivacious live sets. “Someday She Said” is a swelling indie rocker that lends itself well to Lilly Aycud’s soaring trumpet parts. Later, cumbia meets mariachi on “Lluvia Paz,” further highlighting Barnitz’s — and his bandmates’ — dynamic range. It takes a special talent to switch modes this fluidly; that Barnitz can do it with such pizzazz is simply a testament to his staying power. Spencer the Gardner plays a CD-release party for Breaking My Own Heart on Saturday, November 3, at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club. Visit sohosb.com for info.
