A bill authored by Assemblymember Das Williams to protect area waters from nonnative quagga and zebra mussel infestations was signed into law this week. AB 2443 establishes a fee increase on freshwater vessel registration — recreational boats often spread the pesky species, which disrupt food chains and attach to pipes, canals, and gates and impede water movement — and the extra money will help local jurisdictions better prevent and manage infestations, Williams’s office said.
