Perhaps Americans should get beyond the dated concept that the White House press corps in aggregate is tantamount to the public relations arm of the Democrat National Committee.
Enough of the corps appears to have broken away from their voluntary shackles and demonstrated enough journalistic fortitude that President Obama doesn’t feel comfortable amidst the heat of a presidential campaign that is slipping away from the Democrats to go before them unscripted and unrehearsed.
He is hand-picking friendly media personalities in “battleground states,” telling them in advance what topics he wishes to discuss, and then proceeding through Team Obama’s “Talking Points” in order.
Can you imagine the uproar if George W. Bush would have conspired to circumvent the White House Press Corps with a plan to get his message out with the aid of a TelePrompTer (if he used one) and at no cost to the GOP’s re-election war chest?
With Team Obama’s fundraising tailing off, all of a sudden Barack Obama must save limited resources. But this has to do with more than just money. The president can no longer go before the most reliable demographic loyal to Democrats – working journalists – without potentially coming out scarred and embattled.
Nothing surprises me any more. This man will do anything and say anything to gain four more years in the Oval Office, where he will no longer have to answer to the American electorate, much less the White House Press Corps!
